Kolkata, March 8: Having managed to field a strong side in the last minute amid a contract row with their board (WICB), West Indies captain Darren Sammy said here Tuesday that their aim is to regain back the World Twenty20 title to restore the faith among the Caribbean fans.
“As of now we are in the World Twenty20 and that’s what our focus is on. It’s just cricket. At the end we are professionals, but this event means a lot to us as a group. The next edition will take place in 2020 and by then quite a few of us will be gone. So we want to win this edition,” Sammy told reporters.
“Everyone’s focus is on winning. A win here will mean a lot to us and people at home, especially in the current situation of our cricket. It’s not just about the men’s team but the women’s side as well. It is all about making your country proud,” the West Indian skipper added.
Sammy also stated that the West Indies are really a confident side in the T20 format. “We have some great players in the dressing room… Chris (Gayle), Marlon (Samuels), Dwayne (Bravo). It’s one format of the game we as a team is really confident. When I see all this quality in this dressing room my job becomes very easy as a captain. We will certainly miss (Kieron) Pollard and (Sunil) Narine. But I feel the others can do the job,” the skipper asserted with a big smile lighting up his face.
