Bhubaneswar, April 15: There was no respite from heatwave conditions in the state with the IMD predicting the situation to continue for at least five more days even as the entire western region was on boil with the mercury soaring up to 45.8°C in Sonepur.
There was no major change over the maximum temperature in the state as the heatwave condition continued to prevail in some places over the state. Weather has been dry over the state,
IMD sources indicated the temperature was above normal over north interior Orissa and the rest of the state. Sonepur in western region was the hottest place in the state recording a maximum temperature of 45.8°C, the IMD said in a bulletin.
Similar situation prevailed in Titilagarh where the mercury shot up to 45.7°C. Both Bhawanipatna and Sundargarh recorded 44.5°C.
In Bhubaneswar, the maximum temperature stood at 40.2°C. Meanwhile, the unofficial death toll allegedly due to sunstroke increased to 31 with one more case being reported from Nayagarh district.
The state government has so far examined five cases and found that the deaths happened due to some other reasons and not owing to heat related incidents, said Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Mohapatra.
Reports of the highest five alleged sunstroke deaths came from Khurda district followed by four from Cuttack district, three each from Angul and Nayagarh districts, while Balasore, Ganjam and Keonjhar reported two cases each.
Rayagada, Nupada, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Bargarh and Bolangir reported one death case each allegedly due to sunstroke.
