Bhubaneswar: About 30 students of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) Sunday took out a rally from Haldipadia slum to Laxmisagar police station protesting against alleged police inaction in cracking down on flourishing narcotics business in the city.
In a memorandum submitted to Laxmisagar police, BPUT Students’ Association (BSA) advisor Subhendu Nayak said Haldipadia slum in Laxmisagar has turned into a hub for narcotics and drug addicts.
BSA secretary Samiran Dash said most of the buyers of the contrabands sold by peddlers at Haldipadia are students. “A week ago, one of our friends died due to an overdose of brown sugar,” Dash added.
Asutosh Mohanty, a BPUT student, had allegedly died due to drug overdose a week ago. “We tracked down the call of the person who used to supply Mohanty the drugs. We laid a trap and picked him up from Haldipadia before handing him over to Capital police,” Dash said.
Capital police said the man was later handed over to Khandagiri police as the case was under their jurisdiction.
Laxmisagar police said they regularly keep tabs on drug peddlers in Haldipadia and make arrests as and when required.
