London, July 10: French duo Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hughes Herbert were crowned champions in the men’s doubles category of the prestigious Wimbledon after a straight sets victory over fellow French pair of Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin here, Saturday.
Mahut and Herbert were comfortable victors in the end, winning 6-4, 7-6(6-1), 6-3. The title was their second Grand Slam doubles title after the US Open doubles crown which they had won together last year.
Mahut is forever associated with the longest match in tennis history, at Wimbledon in 2010 when he lost an 11-hour marathon to American John Isner. He also finished runner-up at the 2015 Australian Open in his first tournament in tandem with Herbert.
“It is an amazing feeling after lifting such a prestigious title. It is like dream come true for me. With the Wimbledon crown, I’m feeling very proud,” said Mahut. “This is my second Grand Slam title after US Open last year. I’m thankful to Pierre for this success.”
