Bhubaneswar, July 29: Lalit Kala Akademi, Regional Centre, organised a dialogue series on visual art and related arts named ‘Kala- Malika’ at Utkal University of Culture here Friday.
About 50 students of video art and faculty members attended the programme and learned various aspects of visual and related arts at the event.
Artist Veejayant Das, and art video editor Sarat Naik were the chief speakers at the event.
They spoke of the history of the art form. “Video art is very popular abroad and many have expertise in the subject. But in India, Vivan Sundaram and Navjot Altaf were the two artists who promoted the art form. Life was difficult for a video artist, but after the development of computers, it has become easier and artistes today are able to experiment with new ideas,” Veejayant said.
Sarat, in turn, said artistes needed to develop different perspectives. “Video art also follows almost the same composition as traditional forms, but video installations make the presentation different.”
Ramakrishna Vedala, the regional secretary of the akademi, said: “Utkal University of Culture provides courses in video art. That is why we organised the programme here to give students an idea of what video art is and how it works. The programme was aimed to motivate students who are new to the subject.”
He said most students learn two–dimensional and three-dimensional sculptures, but video art is all about how technology can be used to create art. “Anything can be art, be it a painting, graphic art or an installation. In video art one uses beautiful imagery supported by technology to project his or her thoughts. Many artists abroad often visit Lalit Kala Akademi and present their interesting video art works on different issues,” Vedala added.
Surendranath Sahoo, a student of Utkal University of Culture, said he had heard about video art but had no idea how it was done. “This programme was very informative and helped me understand the art better,” he said .
The programme featured several video art works.
