Narayanpatna: Police Tuesday exhumed a man’s body at Harijan Sahi here in Koraput district 16 days after his death, suspecting him to be murdered by his second wife.
An investigation was launched based on a complaint lodged by the mother of Sunil Hial (27), the deceased.
According to the case details, Sunil married Lankeswari Bagh of Kakirigumma under Laxmipur block two years back despite already being married. Sunil then started living with both his wives under one roof. After a few days, Sunil came to know that Lankeswari was having affairs with other men of the village. Being smitten by her, Sunil merely warned her to mend her ways.
However, he was unexpectedly found dead on the morning of September 10, according to the complaint. He returned home and retired to bed. However, in the middle of the night, Lankeswari alerted neighbours that Sunil was dead. She also informed her mother-in-law about the incident.
Though other family members and Sunil’s neighbours were unable to ascertain the cause of death, they buried the body at a village cremation ground in a state of mourning. Lankeswari also left for her native village soon after her husband’s death.
In the meantime, Sunil’s mother Sadhumati Hial came to know about Lankeswari’s extramarital affairs. She along with her son’s first wife lodged a complaint against Lankeswari at the local police station and police registered a case.
Though police returned empty-handed from Lankeswari’s village Kakirigumma, they exhumed Sunil’s skeletal remains in the presence of a five-member forensic team from Koraput, Bandhugaon additional tehsildar and the local medical officer. It was sent for post-mortem at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
The cause of death would be revealed after the post-mortem report is received, police said. PNN
