Bhubaneswar: The planned demonstration by as many as 1.5 lakh school teachers has run into trouble after Commissionerate Police refused to grant permission for the protest at Lower PMG area in Bhubaneswar, a source said Wednesday.
In view of the ongoing Matriculation examination in Odisha, the police denied permission to the teachers who are protesting under the banner of Prathamik Sikshyak Mahasangh, the source added.
The source added that the association has termed the denial of permission unfortunate. The association will hold a meeting to decide the future course of action.
The primary teachers who are planning to come to Bhubaneswar have applied for three days of leave. However, their leaves have not been granted by their respective Block Education Officers (BEO) and they have been ordered not to leave the headquarters, informed the source.
Notably, the teachers’ have a three-point charter of demands which includes:
- The state government should withdraw all contractual appointments, regularise junior teachers at the primary education level, and consider their initial six to eight-year term of appointment for annual salary increment.
- Salary at par with Central government pay scale.
- Reintroduction of the previous pension scheme.
