Bhubaneswar: Sale of liquor at exorbitant prices is rampant in the capital city and the modus operandi suggests that it is being run by organised gangs.
There are around seven licensed liquor outlets in the city but some miscreants, who are mostly from other states, here purchase huge quantity of liquor from these stores and then sell it illegally in other areas of the city at inflated price.
“People are purchasing liquor from these miscreants by paying double its price as they are getting it near their residence. These miscreants have roped in youngsters from their states to make some quick money,” police sources said.
“Cops nab the miscreants selling liquor but they do not apprehend the kingpins of the illegal trade. Some cops are even hand-in-glove with these bootleggers. In several cases the cops say they have seized 5 litres of liquor but the seizure is much more than that, and this helps the miscreants to get bail on the same day,” police sources further said.
Baramunda bus stand, Ruchika Market, Haldipadia, Mancheswar, etc, are some of the spots where country and foreign liquor are easily available.
Commissionerate police officials confirmed to Orissa POST that several youngsters from other states, mainly Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, come to the city to sell illicit liquor to make quick money.
“QAT and Khandagiri police station officials had recently nabbed one Anil Kumar Yadav of Uttar Pradesh and had recovered 30 bottles aska 40 and `6,150 from him. We are taking action against miscreants selling illicit liquor,” they said.
