Lanjigarh: Maoists struck again in Kalahandi district, hanged a former sarpanch of Trilochanpur panchayat under Bijepur police limits to death on the suspicion that he was a police informer.
Deceased Jayant Majhi was a native of Sapachanchara village under Trilochanpur panchayat.
Jayant’s killing, the third such incident in a span of 10 days, has triggered panic among the residents. The village, home to 22 families, wore a deserted look while an eerie silence prevailed in the locality following the murder.
The matter came to fore after the residents noticed Jayant’s body in a forest with a letter written by the ultras lying nearby on the outskirts of Dangabahal village on Lanjigarh- Bijepur road.
In the letter, the ultras owing their allegiance to Banshadhara-Nagabali-Ghumusar division of the outlawed CPI (Maoists) claimed to have killed Jayant as he acted as a ‘police informer’ during the Maoist-police encounter that took place in Sapachanchara village February 11, 2015.
According to the victim’s father Gadi Majhi the ultras had kidnapped his son along with two others – Chandra Majhi and Ganesh Majhi – Monday night. They sent back Chandra and Ganesh home after severely assaulting them while asking them to come in morning and take back the body of Jayant.
Jayant’s limbs were found tied while there was a rope around his neck, indicating the ultras hanged him to death.
In the last few days, the ultras had killed a village guard Chemu Harijan and a youth Lalu Nayak of Salapang village under the block on similar charges.
Earlier, Maoists had killed Lakshminarayan Pattnaik alias Ditan and Ajit Pattanaik February 2, 2015 and July 27, 2011 respectively.
The ultras have made their presence felt in the remote regions of the block, often by sticking posters.
Terming the incident unfortunate, Kesinga sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Jagmohan Meena said he has given some money to the villagers for cremation of the body after an ambulance driver of Vedanta
refused to go to the place out
of fear.
