Bhadrak: A woman died days after undergoing tubectomy surgery in Odisha’s Bhadrak district, a source said Saturday.
The deceased woman was identified as Jayanti Bej. She was the daughter of Hrusikesh Bej from Rauturapur village within Agarpada police limits in Bhadrak district.
According to the source, a tubectomy operation was performed on Jayanti July 25 at a government-run family-planning camp on the premises of a community health centre (CHC) in Barapada area of Bhadrak district. Later on that day, Jayanti experienced nausea, pain and her stomach swelled.
Jayanti was initially admitted to a hospital in Agarpada and was later shifted to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) as her health condition worsened. At the DHH, the family members were told that her urinary tract had been severed during tubectomy, the source added.
Amid deterioration in Jayanti’s health condition, her family members took her to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack. However, she breathed her last July 27 while receiving medical care at SCBMCH, the source informed.
Jayanti’s family alleged that the doctors at the CHC performed tubectomy on her in darkness amidst a power cut.

“There was a power cut during surgery. The doctor on duty had told us to take her to Cuttack if pain persists”, one of the family members said.
On the other hand, Bhadrak CDMO (Chief District Medical Officer) Santosh Patra refuted allegations of severing the urinary tract during the surgery of Jayanti.
“As many as 28 sterilisations were carried out that day. The doctor who had come to the camp is an experienced medical professional and has done many such operations. Water had accumulated in her stomach which is why she was sent to Cuttack. We will be able to know what exactly happened to the woman after the postmortem report arrives,” he added.
The family members of the deceased have registered an FIR at Bhadrak Rural Police Station.
