Odisha weather alert: IMD advises fishermen not to venture into Bay of Bengal on these dates

Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar in its weather alert has advised fishermen not to venture into sea along and off the Odisha coast, northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal between August 1 and August 2, 2023.

The agency informed that under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha, a low-pressure area has formed over north Odisha and adjoining West Bengal coasts.

IMD further informed that under the influence of a low-pressure area, strong monsoon flow and squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph is very likely along and off Odisha coast, west central adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during August 1 and 2.

The weather agency also issued Orange Warning for several districts of the state.

From 8.30 AM of July 30 to 8.30 AM of July 31: As per the Orange Warning (be prepared), heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Dhenkanal districts.

As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jajpur, Puri, Angul, Deogarh, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Subarnapur, Bolangir, Boudh, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Sundargarh and Khurda districts.

In the same time frame, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of the state.

The weather agency suggested the following impacts and actions in connection with the weather forecast.

  1. Temporarily water logging is likely in low-lying areas and underpass roads.
  2. Traffic advisory may be issued for movement in your destination.
  3. Possibility of wall collapse of vulnerable Kutcha houses and some damage to Kutcha roads.
  4. Landslides in vulnerable hilly areas of Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts are likely.
  5. Mining activity may be judiciously regulated in Angul and Dhenkanal districts.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershower is predicted by IMD. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 32 degree Celsius and 26 degree Celsius respectively.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 35.2 degree Celsius was recorded at Channdbali while the lowest minimum temperature of 22.5 degree Celsius was recorded at Phulbani, the bulletin informed.
