Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar in its weather alert issued a Red Warning for several districts of Odisha.
The agency further informed that the depression over the northeast Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards and intensified into a deep depression August 1, 2023.
Upto 8.30 AM of August 2: As per the Red Warning (take action), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (>20cm) is very likely to occur over Balasore, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts. Additionally, there is a possibility of thunder with lightning activity.
As per the Orange Warning (be prepared), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) along with thunder and lightning is very likely to occur at a few places over Jajpur, Bhadrak, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Subarnapur, Boudh, Sundergarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khordha and Puri districts.
As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Bargarh, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Nuapada and Ganajm districts.
In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of the state.
From 8.30 AM of August 2 to 8.30 AM of August 3: As per the Red Warning (take action), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (>20cm) is very likely to occur over Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur districts.
As per the Orange Warning (be prepared), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Subarnapur, Boudh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts.
As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Nabarangpur, Jajpur and Bhadrak districts.
In the same time frame, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the remaining districts of the state.
The weather agency suggested following impacts and actions regarding the weather forecast.
- Flash flood or water logging in low-lying areas, inundation of agriculture fields, mudslides or landslides in vulnerable hilly areas are likely
- Possibility of some damage to informal or kutcha road, wall collapse of vulnerable houses.
- Water logging in underpass roads and occasional reduction of visibility may cause traffic congestion in urban areas.
- It may lead to a significant rise in the water level of rivers.
- Keep arrangements for drainage of excess water.
- Avoid movement in affected areas and stay in safe place.
- Postpone fertilizer or chemical application in agricultural fields; keep livestock in a safe place.
- Mining activity may be judiciously regulated in Angul and Dhenkanal districts.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, a cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershower is predicted by IMD. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 28 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius respectively.
In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 35.2 degree Celsius was recorded at Jharsuguda while the lowest minimum temperature of 22.5 degree Celsius was recorded at Phulbani, the bulletin informed.
