Bhubaneswar, Jan 17: A compliant of abduction of a young girl took a twist Saturday with the young couple telling the inspector in-charge (IIC) at the Mahila police station that they had married of their own accord.
“Yes,” Rashmita Behera, a Plus III pass-out, said confidently when asked by IIC Bijayinee Malla in front of members of both families if she had been staying with Krishnanandan Sahu, a DRDO civil engineer, of her own accord.
The young couple, who were clutching each others’ hands throughout, claimed to have had their marriage registered January 16.
The bride’s brother, who did not want to reveal his identity, approached the Mahila police station late in the afternoon with other family members to lodge a complaint against Sahu. On coming to know about the incident, the couple rushed to the police station together, accompanied by four brothers of the boy and a number of friends.
“Yesterday, Rashmita’s brother came to our home and wanted to take her along on pretext that her father is unwell,” said Sahu. “I was suspicious about his intention and didn’t let Rashmita go as he was not agreeable to both of us going and seeing her father,” Sahu said. “How could I have let my wife go alone? What if he had tried to brainwash her against me?” Sahu asked.
Rashmita, standing beside Sahu, appeared relieved. “I’m happy the tussle between the two families has finally come to an end,” she said.
The couple took blessings of Rashmita’s father, who was quite throughout, but hugged Sahu in the end. However, Rashmita’s family members made a last bid to take her home as the inspector in-charge let them go after taking a written undertaking of the couple about their marriage and verifying their age certificate.
The couple, with the groom’s family, left immediately after submitting all the papers to the police even as the bride’s family lingered around speaking in low tones to each other.
