Bhubaneswar: Orissa lad Subham Sarangi has found a place among the probables for the Indian squad who will participate in the prestigious U-17 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by India, October 6-28.
The lanky guy is currently on an exposure trip to Egypt with the India colts who are participating in the India-Egypt Friendship Cup tournament. “Being a winger the Orissa-based player, who is settled in Delhi now, has every chance to be selected into the final 22. There is also every possibility that he will get the chance to play few matches in the mega event,” stated Football Association of Orissa (FAO) joint secretary Avijit Paul.
Subham was born in Jagannathpur village of Balasore district in June 24, 2000. But later he shifted base to Noida to pursue his football ambitions. Few sports lovers in the state however, know that Subham was included as a part of India’s preparation campaign for the U-17 World Cup after the country won the bid to host the event way back in 2014.
Subham, the son of Pritikanta and Anita is a good student also. So initially his parents were reluctant to push him into football. But while representing the country in the U-14 Asian Football Championships, he impressed all and sundry with his skill and speed. Since then there has been no looking back and his parents have allowed football to win over education.
After Subham’s display, India U-14 coach Narayan Menon persuaded his parents to allow the kid to play football seriously and the rest is what they call history. Since then Subham has played in many big events like the U-15 and U-18 I-League, AFC Cup, Subrata Mukherjee International Cup and the GFA League. He has also represented Delhi in various national level football tournaments and also the Santosh Trophy. His most notable performance was in the GFA League last season, where he scored five important goals. He has also played in BRICS Cup-2016 against Japan in Goa.
After gaining valuable international experience, Subham is determined to make it to the final squad for the World Cup. He is working very hard to achieve his goals. “Football is my only passion. I want to give it my all for the country in the World Cup. But before that I have to make it to the team. I am putting in extra hours to achieve my goal,” Subham stated.
