Bhubaneswar, June 18:Helen Brahma, known for textile painting, recently exhibited a series of paintings on Vahanas of the goddess at Rue Notre Dame de Nazareth, Paris. This was her first 15-day solo exhibition in Paris which concluded June 15. The series included 10 paintings on canvas and 25 drawings based on ‘War, Weaving and Peace’. Helen has been making paintings using native textile design styles such as Sambalpuri for many years. Helen said she was overwhelmed by the response from Paris. “I received a lots of appreciation. Many loved the concept of war and peace conveyed through textile design,” she said. “The paintings of the vahanas of 64 yoginis amazed visitors. They would ask me about the importance of the vahanas and why I use textile design. They are crazy about Indian art and are curious to learn
styles and techniques. The response motivating and I plan to hold another exhibition soon. I even got an offer to exhibit my works in France,” she said. Many of her paintings got sold and booked by art lovers. “On the opening day of the exhibition, people bought two of my paintings; many also made bookings. The response of buyers there changed my belief that only few people buy art. As an artist, our only aim should be to create good work and not to focus on business, if our creations are exceptional, success will be ours,” she said. The artist also made it a point to visit galleries of renown in Britain and France during her sojourn. “I was excited to see Da vinci’s ‘Monalisa’. The galleries in these places have great collections of art, which shows that art has changed over the years. I learnt that we Indians still follow the traditional style, we need to experiment a lot and change Indian art too,” she said.
