Bhubaneswar: Two melanistic tigers – Krishna and Subhranshu – have been released to Tiger Safari at Nadankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here Tuesday.
The tigers, born in July 2014, were released into the safari at 9.30am in the presence of NZP director Sisir Acharya. They will remain in the safari for a few months which will help them grow in their natural habitat.
When asked about the reasons for shifting the tigers, deputy zoo director Jayanta Dash said, “Visitors love to see activities of adult tigers. The 20-hectare area of the safari will give the tigers a feel of residing in a forest. The two were kept in an enclosure but we recently decided to shift them to the safari in an effort to monitor their behavioral change and growth.”
“All tigers were evacuated before shifting Krishna and Subhranshu into the safari. It won’t be easy for these tigers to mingle with other tigers immediately,” said Dash.
This is the first batch of young tigers which was shifted to safari this year. Another batch will be shifted after a few months, he added.
