Bhubaneswar, July 5: A voluntary organisation in the city observed Rasogola Divas on the holy occasion of Niladri Bije—the day when Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra enter the Jagannath temple after their nine-day long annual Rath Yatra to their aunt’s house. Members of Niladarivihar Youth & Cultural Association (NYCA) dedicated the day to the spongy and syrupy sweet to claim its Oriya origin. They celebrated the day in front of the chariot of the Sailashree Vihar Jagannath Temple. They offered the sweet to
the lords in the chariot and distributed the same among the devotees, here Wednesday. “It is big day for us and everyone should join us to observe the day,” Prakash Chandra Panigrahi, president of NYCA said. When asked about his opinion on the ongoing tussle between Orissa and Bengal over the sweet’s origin, he said, “Though the decision is yet to come, as an Oriya we know that Rasagolla has a long history in the state. During Niladari Bije, the trinities are offered the sweet—this has been going on since several centuries.” The day was first observed in July 6, 2015. Rasagola lovers from
across the state have been organising various events on the day. They deliver on the history and importance of the sweet in Oriya culture. They also take to social media to observe the day by sharing anecdotes and pictures of the sweet. The day is being observed after Orissa and West Bengal entered into a tug-of-war over the origin of the sweet for GI tag. The Patent Information Centre of West Bengal government’s department of science and technology applied for GI status for Banglar Rasogolla on September 18, 2015. This triggered dispute between the neighbouring states.
