Bhubaneswar, July 18:When it comes to the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship, Bhubaneswar can proudly boast of its hard work and success. It was a mission successfully accomplished in just 90 days. While the city is yet to get out of the sporty hangover, the state government declared its plan of introducing sports in the school curriculum from the next academic session. A class-wise syllabi and a
calendar of activities on sports, health and physical education will be prepared by SCERT. The students will be graded on their performance. According to sources, steps would be taken to ensure that the grades count in the Class X board certificate. “A separate manual will be developed by the Board of Secondary Education for juniors (classes 1 to VII) and seniors (classes IX and X),” said Chudamani Jena, director of elementary education. But, what’s city’s take on the matter? Orissa POSTgets you the reactions from denizens across the temple city.
“The motive behind making physical education and sports a part of the curricula is to create sportspersons and to develop a sporting culture in the state. The courses will help in developing the interests towards sports and will motivate them in pursuing sports as careers. However, it shouldn’t be made compulsory. It should be an optional subject” Chittaranjan Misra, Educationist.

“Sports curriculum will help the students in understanding their prospective at an early stage. If a student is good in any sport, then he must get all sorts of training in that. Parent’s involvement is very important. They must understand the child’s liking and identify his or her talent in sports. We also need good infrastructure to sustain the efforts.” Dipak Samantarai, Teacher

“It is important to identify the hidden potential in students. We should be able to know about the interests of our children. Thus, tracking the skills will be very crucial in this program. We must try to create sporting talents from the state. Let there be legends like Anju Bobby George, Milkha Singh, PT Usha, and others from Orissa.” Siddharth Kuanr Teacher
“The step will certainly help identify the sporting talents in our state. As we know, our state is lagging behind in sports and games. If we leave apart Sundergarh and other tribal districts, our state iscertainly backward in terms of sports. Children should be given an opportunity to choose their favorite sport. We also need a good set of coaches for training the children in schools.”

Chiranjib Pati Sports expert

“It is a welcome move. It will benefit students. But there are few things that need consideration by the authorities. Teachers who will be recruited for the purpose must be given equal salaries as other subject teachers. Otherwise, they might lack interest or join protests later for seeking equal pay.” Sonamika Roy Principal
