Cuttack: A 16-year-old tribal girl from Kalahandi accompanied by her relatives Tuesday lodged a complaint with the director general of police (DGP) alleging her abduction and rape in May last.
The girl and her family approached the DGP after Dharmagarh police in Kalahandi failed to arrest the accused.
Taking the incident seriously, additional director general of police (headquarters) Satyajit Mohanty ordered Kalahandi superintendent of police (SP) to arrest the accused at the earliest. Mohanty also asked the SP to submit a report on police failure to nab the accused in connection with the incident.
According to the complaint, a youth from Chancharabhadi under Junagarh police limits had abducted the tribal girl May 29 while she was on her way to a temple. He later forcibly took the girl to Bhubaneswar in a train and raped her repeatedly in the city.
Unable to trace the girl, her relatives lodged a missing report with Dharmagarh police. Police, however, did not register a case and asked the victim’s family to search for her in the neighbourhood.
In the meantime, the accused contacted victim’s family over phone and informed them that he would marry the minor. Soon, Dharmagarh police registered a kidnap case after receiving a complaint from the girl’s father.
According to the complaint, the accused had sent the girl to her home in a hired car June 4. However, police refused to register a rape case in this regard despite repeated pleas from the victim’s family.
Protesting the police inaction, the girl’s father met Kalahandi SP and sought his intervention. The SP had reportedly asked Dharmagarh police to register a rape case and act against the accused. However, police are yet to nab the youth.
“We have raised the kidnap and rape incident with DGP, human rights protection cell and ST&SC commission,” said a relative of the victim. PNN
