Rajnagar: Bhitarkanika National Park will be closed to tourists from May 1 to July 31, a two-month period to accommodate saltwater crocodiles’ annual breeding season.
The park, recognised as one of the premier breeding grounds for the species, enforces the closure each year to minimise human disturbance during this critical period. Female crocodiles typically move inland from tidal zones to prepare nesting sites and lay eggs during these months.
Officials said mother crocodiles are known to become highly aggressive while guarding their nests. The restriction on tourist access is intended to prevent potential attacks and ensure a safe, undisturbed environment for the reptiles to nest and hatch their young.
