Sambalpur: Sixty-six of the 112 medicos who were ordered to take charge at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) have joined work Wednesday. This was confirmed to OP by VIMSAR director Dr Ashwini Pujhary.
“Sixty-six doctors have joined work by 5.30 pm when I left office. More are likely to join later,” said Dr Pujhary.
As an emergency measure, the state government Tuesday directed 112 doctors from MKCG, Berhampur, to join work at VIMSAR as a stopgap arrangement. Half of requisitioned medicos joined work here Wednesday. Sources said more medicos are likely to join work soon.
Meanwhile, the Orissa Medical Services Association (OMSA), an umbrella outfit of government doctors in the state, asked its members not to join work at VIMSAR. The body has supported the cause of the agitating medical students. Interestingly, the local unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has split with regard to their stance on the VIMSAR issue.
In the morning, there was no clarity on the joining of the medicos of MKCG who were under pressure from OMSA to not join work. The collector sought the help of the health minister and with the intervention of the latter the medicos finally joined work in the evening.
In the meeting it held a day after the crisis unfolded at VIMSAR, there was a division on the stance to be taken on the issue. While some members criticised the actions of the director, another section approved the initiatives taken by the director.
Meanwhile, locals sat on a dharna at the Kucheri Chhak here to protest against the highhandedness of agitating doctors at VIMSAR, people from Bargarh and other districts also took part in the dharna to show their solidarity with the director.
A delegation of the citizens committee met the RDC and the collector separately Wednesday to discuss the worsening situation at VIMSAR. It submitted memorandums to the RDC and the collector.
