Berhampur: The Berhmapur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) will adopt Indore’s acclaimed sanitation model in an effort to improve cleanliness in the city, sources said Thursday. BeMC Commissioner Prathamesh Arvind Rajeshirke, City Engineer Manoj Kumar Patra and other officials recently visited Indore and Bhopal to study their waste management systems. According to the City Engineer, BeMC plans to implement Indore’s “capsule transportation” method (special tankers), which uses sealed tanker vehicles to transport garbage. Currently, household waste is collected across Berhampur and is dumped at three waste transit points.
The waste is then processed using pressure machines before being sent by trucks to the Mahuda waste treatment plant. However, residents have complained that garbage often spills from trucks and tractors during transport, littering roads and causing foul smell due to leaking wastewater. To address these issues and ensure cleaner surroundings, BeMC will shift to a sealed tanker system similar to the one used in Indore. Tanker vehicles will be stationed at the existing transit points in Dhanmera Sahi, Mango Market and Gosani Nuagaon. Waste will be loaded directly into these tankers and transported to the Mahuda waste treatment plant, preventing leakage and odour.
Commissioner Rajeshirke has discussed the plan with the state officials, and procurement of the tankers will begin after funds are approved, City Engineer Patra said. BeMC will also install GPS devices on all 35 garbage collection vehicles. A dedicated command and control system will monitor their movement, with designated staff tracking operations in real time. The corporation also aims to strengthen segregation of dry and wet waste during door-to-door collection, following the Indore model. Plans are underway to purchase fully enclosed garbage collection vehicles and intensify public awareness on waste disposal.
