Koraput: Despite being rich in forest and agricultural produce, Odisha continues to lose market control over products grown within its own territory, with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh dominating trade, particularly in the Kotia region of Koraput district.
This concern came to the fore when Pottangi block Chairperson Kalpana Pangi held discussions with the Koraput District Collector regarding the marketing of Kotia turmeric, tamarind, and other local produce within Odisha.
During the meet, Pangi highlighted how farmers and forest dwellers of Kotia are compelled to sell their produce in Andhra markets due to the lack of proper marketing infrastructure in Odisha.
As a result, traders from the neighbouring state control pricing, transportation, and profits, while Odisha farmers receive minimal returns for their hard work.

“Kotia turmeric, tamarind, and other forest products are produced on Odisha soil, but unfortunately, they are being sold in Andhra Pradesh markets.
This clearly shows how Andhra has established dominance over trade in our border areas, while Odisha is lagging behind in providing market access to its own people,” Pangi said.
She further stated that due to the absence of procurement centres, mandis, and organised marketing support in Odisha, farmers have no option but to depend on Andhra traders.
“If these products are marketed within Odisha through cooperatives, SHGs, and government-backed platforms, farmers will get fair prices and Odisha’s economy will benefit,” she added.
The chairperson urged the district administration and the state government to take immediate steps for market linkages, branding, and value addition for Kotia produce.
She emphasised that failure to act would further strengthen Andhra’s influence in border trade and continue the economic exploitation of Odisha’s farmers.
