Bhubaneswar: A court Wednesday awarded a 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a 31-year old man after convicting him of drug peddling in the Capital City last year.
“The 2nd Additional District Judge-cum-Special Judge, Bhubaneswar, also slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict, Prakash Sethy,” Special Public Prosecutor Rashmiranjan Brahma said, adding that failure to pay the fine would entail an additional one year of RI.
According to the prosecution, the Special Task Force of the Odisha Police nabbed Sethy and recovered 330 grams of brown sugar from his possession in Bankuala area under Badagada police limits of the City May 21, 2025.
Soon, the contraband was sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory, which confirmed the recovered material as brown sugar (diacetylmorphine).
After a successful investigation, a chargesheet was submitted against Sethy under Section 21(c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psycho tropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
During the trial, the prosecution examined nine witnesses and exhibited 32 relevant documents.
