Bhubaneswar: The Special Crime Unit (SCU) of the Commissionerate Police seized 370 grams of brown sugar worth RS 37 lakh and arrested three persons near Doordarshan Kendra Bhubaneswar under Saheed Nagar police limits in connection with the case, police said Saturday.
The accused have been identified as Sameer Khan (44), Sk Irsad Mohammad (23) and Munaf Khan (22), all residents of Jaleswar in Balasore district. Acting on specific intelligence, an SCU team launched a surveillance operation Friday night.
The accused were intercepted at around 10 pm while allegedly attempting to carry out a narcotics transaction. During the operation, police seized 370 grams of brown sugar from their possession. Two motorcycles, four mobile phones, and cash amounting to Rs 1,650 were also recovered.
Police sources said the accused were apprehended without resistance and were being interrogated to ascertain the source of the contraband and possible links to a wider drug distribution network operating in the region.
The arrested persons were booked under the relevant sections of the NDPC ACT and will be produced before a local court. Further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and identify other associates involved in the illegal trade, police added.
