Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Sulochana Das Wednesday launched a major beautification and green drive for key traffic junctions and median stretches along NH16 passing through the Capital city, with support from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
In the first phase, plantation work kicked off at CRPF Square. Saplings were planted under the bridge and in the surrounding median areas.
BMC said the initiative aims to improve air quality, reduce the Air Quality Index (AQI), absorb roadside dust pollutants, and lower heat levels.
Authorities also hope the plantation drive will create a cleaner, greener and visually attractive urban corridor for residents and commuters.
Since NH-16 serves as one of the main entry gateways to Bhubaneswar, officials said the project will significantly enhance the city’s visual identity.
The plantation and maintenance work is being carried out by VASA, a voluntary organisation empanelled by SMS India Private Limited.
The company is funding the project through its CSR resources, while VASA will oversee implementation, monitoring and long-term maintenance.
BMC remains committed to introducing more citizen-centric and environmentally sustainable projects.
In the coming months, residents and travellers are expected to witness the phased beautification of other important corridors as well.
Notably, Bhubaneswar secured the fourth rank nationally in the Swachh Vayu Survey 2025, and the civic body said efforts will continue to make the City cleaner, greener, healthier and more beautiful. Deputy Mayor Manjulata Kahar, civic officials, corporators and senior BMC officers were also present on the occasion.
