Malkangiri: Maoists Friday night bludgeoned a tribal man to death at a remote village in Malkangiri district suspecting him to be a police informer.
Around 40 armed ultras stormed into Kurub village under Kalimela police limits late in the night and dragged Dambaru Nayak out of his house before killing him in the presence of his family, according to a report.
Dambaru’s son was also brutally beaten up by the rebels. They had earlier received threat from the Maoists, the family said.
The ultras dumped Dambaru’s body at a forested area on the outskirt of the village, police said, adding that his head was hit with stone and some blunt object. The post-mortem report would show whether he was also fired at.
Two hand-written notes left behind at the site by the assailants stated that Dambaru was eliminated as he worked as an informer for the police in the area, it was learnt.
It was also alleged in the letter that the deceased was passing on information about the activities and movement of Maoists to the police.
Dambaru, who earlier happened to be a Maoist sympathiser, had severed ties with the red rebels and given up the path of violence around a year ago, said the family members.
Villagers said that the Maoists had earlier issued a warning and asked them not to provide any information to the police.
Earlier, more than a hundred Maoist sympathisers surrendered before the police in November 2016 while the security personnel had organised a public relation camp in March 2017.
Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena said the deceased was not a police informer and measures would be taken to hold a camp to protect the innocent tribals who don’t succumb to the pressure exerted by the left wing extremists. PNN
