Bhabanipatana: Internationally acclaimed fashion designer Sujit Meher from Kalahandi district has been invited to showcase his signature Habaspuri silk collection at London Fashion Week, marking the first time the state’s traditional handloom will be presented at the global fashion event.
Meher, a native of Chichaiguda village in Junagada block, was selected during the event’s design selection process, which featured entries from leading designers across several countries.
The exposition will be held at Novotel London Hammersmith November 21 and 22, where Meher will represent India with a special collection of Habaspuri silk sarees under his label, ‘Tilottama’. His participation is being hailed as a milestone for Odisha’s handloom sector and has been widely praised in Kalahandi district.
Meher has earned international recognition for blending traditional Indian handloom with contemporary luxury fashion. Through ‘Tilottama’, he has been working to revive Sambalpuri and Habaspuri textiles while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for hundreds of weavers and artisans. “I do not just design clothes; I design for a social cause,” Meher said, describing his philosophy of combining heritage craftsmanship with modern design.

Organisers said London Fashion Week serves as a leading international platform celebrating Indian fashion, bringing together global buyers, media, celebrities and fashion enthusiasts while showcasing the country’s creativity, craftsmanship and rich textile heritage. According to the organisers, Meher’s selection reflects the event’s commitment to promoting designers whose work not only demonstrates creative excellence but also contributes to preserving traditional crafts and generating meaningful social impact. Expressing his delight, Meher said showcasing Habaspuri silk sarees at London Fashion Week as the state’s first handloom representation at the global event would be a matter of pride for Kalahandi district and Odisha.
