Koraput: Two students were injured after the main gate of a government school collapsed on them while they were entering the campus in Odisha’s Koraput district Thursday, police said.
The incident took place at Kaladi Project Upper Primary School under Kasandi panchayat in Nandapur block.
The injured students have been identified as Deepak Majhi (7) and Kamesh Khil (8), they said.
According to the parents of the injured children, the students had reached the school in the morning and were entering through the main gate when the rusted iron structure, along with a portion of the adjoining cement boundary wall, suddenly collapsed on them.
Villagers and school authorities rushed to the spot, rescued the children from beneath the debris and shifted them to the Nandapur Community Health Centre for treatment, police said.
Both students received first aid and are now out of danger, hospital sources said.
“The children sustained minor injuries and were given medical treatment. Their condition is stable, and they have been discharged after first aid,” a health official at the Nandapur Community Health Centre said.
School authorities said the entrance gate had weakened over time and collapsed unexpectedly due to rains.
“We have informed the Nandapur Block Education Officer and the Block Development Officer about the incident and requested immediate action to ensure the safety of students,” a school official said.
