Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress (OPMC) Tuesday staged a protest against remarks allegedly made by BJP leaders and workers in Uttarakhand and a non-political organisation targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the controversy surrounding the Manusmriti. Led by OPMC president Minakshi Bahinipati, a large number of women Congress workers marched from the Congress office to Master Canteen Square here, carrying banners displaying symbols associated with the Manusmriti.
The protesters later staged a demonstration at Master Canteen Square and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Addressing the gathering, Bahinipati said the Congress respected the Constitution drafted by BR Ambedkar and was committed to following the principles enshrined in it. “Manusmriti has promoted discrimination and inequality among people and has no place in present-day society,” she said. The Mahila Congress president criticised Modi and Shah for allegedly maintaining silence over the August 8 incident in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.
