Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police have intensified action against criminals, anti-social elements and illegal activities across the state as part of the special ‘Daman’ operation launched ahead of the upcoming festive season.
According to the State Police Headquarters, the operation, launched September 21 on the direction of DGP Binaytosh Mishra, has so far resulted in the execution of 1,448 non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and the filing of proceedings against 1,012 persons under Section 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The coordinated operation is being carried out by district police, Commissionerate Police, Railway Police and other police units with a focus on maintaining peace and security during the festive season and curbing the illegal trade of drugs and liquor.
As part of the anti-drug drive, police registered 89 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 109 persons.
Around 8.13 tonnes of ganja were seized, while 19,387 cannabis plants were destroyed. Police also seized 394.645 grams of brown sugar and 1,066 bottles of cough syrup.
The crackdown on illegal liquor trade resulted in the registration of 1,707 cases under the Excise Act and the arrest of 140 persons.
Police seized 10,298.24 litres of illicit country liquor, 2,922.409 litres of foreign liquor and 1,092.54 litres of Aska-40 liquor.
Besides, 800 kg of fermented wash and 81 litres of Mahuli liquor were seized.
Police also stepped up action against gambling, with 46 cases registered and 67 persons arrested.
Cash amounting to Rs 4,36,086 was seized from those involved. In cases relating to forced collection of money, police registered 16 cases, arrested 12 persons and seized Rs 10,520.
The drive against illegal arms, ammunition and explosives led to the registration of six cases.
Police seized five firearms, one revolver, four rounds of ammunition, one magazine, two empty cartridges, 2.5 kg of gunpowder and two swords.
The police also registered seven cases against organised crime and arrested 18 persons.
The State Police Headquarters said the ‘Daman’ operation is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for people during the festive season while strengthening crime prevention and preventive policing.
