Baripada: A patient died, and two others sustained critical injuries when a private ambulance caught fire after an oxygen cylinder exploded at Udala Hospital in Mayurbhanj district Thursday evening.
The incident occurred when the ambulance arrived at the hospital to carry Sujosh Barik of Kundabai village under Udala police limits to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. After the patient was placed inside the ambulance, the oxygen cylinder was being fitted when it suddenly caught fire, triggering a powerful explosion at around 9pm.
Locals pulled the patients out of the ambulance. Sujosh sustained burn injuries in the fire and later died. Two patients, Sarat Pradhan and Masi Munda, were critically injured.
