Cuttack: Tension prevailed at Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) here Wednesday after relatives of a patient allegedly assaulted a house surgeon after the former’s demise.
Sources said Nrusingha Das of Mughalpatna village under Mahanga police limits was rushed to SCBMCH Medicine ward Tuesday evening with some health complications. A doctor who attended to Das had advised his relatives to shift the patient to the intensive care unit (ICU).
Das’ relatives tried to shift him to a private hospital after no ICU was found vacant at the premier health institute. However, they failed to get permissionto shift as the doctor who had attended to Das was not in office then.
Das reportedly died at 12.30 am Wednesday while his relatives were frantically searching for the doctor concerned here and there, sources added.
Protesting the attack, hundreds of medical students locked the main gate of the hospital casualty ward. They also staged a sit-in near the hospital superintendent’s office and sought immediate action on their demands.
“We will continue our agitation till the hospital authorities fulfill our demands and ensure round-the-clock security for the doctors,” said SCBMCH House Surgeons’ Association president Prasannajit Patnaik.
Acting on a complaint filed by the agitating medicos, Mangalabagh police registered a case in connection with the assault and detained an attendant.
Soon after Das’ death, his relatives—Bibhudatta and Tuna Singh—assaulted the surgeon though the former claimed that some medical students had attacked him during the tussle.
Police reached the hospital premises and detained Bibhudatta and Tuna.
SCBMCH administrative officer Pratap Mishra said they have consulted the agitating medical students and are trying to fulfill their demands.
