Bhubaneswar: Orissa athlete Manisha Merel missed out on silver by a whisker and settled for a bronze in the U-18 girls’ long jump on the third day of the 33rd National Junior Athletic Championships in Vijayawada, Saturday.
Manisha jumped 5.85 metres, one short of Depanshi Singh (5.86m) of Uttar Pradesh who clinched the silver. Ancy Sojan of Kerala secured the gold medal with a jump of 5.97m. With the bronze, Orissa took their medals tally to seven with two gold and five bronze medals.
Among other state athletes, Fulamani Karjee finished fourth in the U-18 girls’ 400m while Priyanka Mahalik finished in fifth position in the girls’ 5000m walk in the same age category. Chandan Beti, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the finals in the U-16 boys’ long jump.
