Bhubaneswar: Umakanta Senapati who belongs to the Utkal Karate School recently took part in the Gujarat Karate Championships recently. Umakanta who coaches young karate aspirants in Anand, performed very well to win a gold and a silver medal in the 75kg category. The tourney concluded Sunday.
Umakant clinched the yellow metal in the men’s Kumite event and the silver medal in the open Kata event. On the basis of his performance in the tournament Umakanta has qualified for the National Senior Karate Championships at Kolkata in January 2018. He, however, will represent Gujarat.
Double victory
Orissa registered double victories against Gujarat and Kerala on the opening day of the VIIIth National Senior Football Tennis Championships, which was inaugurated at the Dhenkanal Stadium in Dhenkanal, Monday.
Orissa defeated both Gujarat and Kerala by identical 2-0 margins. Twenty nine teams from 24 states are participating in event.
