Bhubaneswar: The state government Thursday suspended two police officers and five doctors for failing to discharge their duties properly.
Taking serious note of the Pramodini Raula acid attack case of 2009, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik suspended the two police officers who had closed down the case without proper investigation.
Patnaik, who also holds the home portfolio, put Nabarangpur sub-divisional police officer RK Jena (the then DSP probing Raula case) and IIC Sankarshan Dalei under suspension, sources in the CMO said.
He also directed police DG RP Sharma to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the two cops. Sharma has been further asked to review all women and child related cases in the state and submit action taken report within 15 days.
The Chief Minister has asked the DGP to ensure proper investigation and monitoring of women and child cases and take action against those officials who have shown negligence in the investigation.
Notably, the Jagatsinghpur police had failed to nab the accused in the case which occurred April 18, 2009 and had closed the case in 2012 citing ‘No Clue’.
However, the case was reopened after Pramodini informed Patnaik about the incident while meeting him here at the Secretariat.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the prime accused of the crime Santosh Bedanta, an Indian Army jawan posted at Kupwara in Jammu & Kashmir, from Kolkata and his aide Biswajit Dalsinghray from Nayagarh.
The duo had thrown acid on Pramodini over a one-sided love affair while she was returning to her uncle’s house at Tirtol. Pramodini, who was then only 16-year-old, underwent a series of surgeries at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack but unfortunately lost her eyesight.
On the other hand, Health and Family Welfare minister Pratap Jena suspended five doctors for not implementing the free medicine distribution scheme Niramaya. Owing to negligence of the doctors, the patients were forced to buy medicines from the market.
The suspended doctors are Talcher sub-divisional medical officer Meena Kumari Dwari, Jagatsinghpur district headquarter hospital’s Mamata Satpathy and Himanshu Sekhar Nanda, Manisangha community health centre’s Suresh Kumar Lenka and Kanakpur primary health centre’s Sanjib Kumar Mohapatra.
