Bhubaneswar, March 12: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has awarded ‘A’ grade to Rama Devi Women’s College in the city on its second attempt, while Maharishi College of Natural Law got ‘B’ in its first attempt.
At the fifth meeting of the NAAC standing committee held March 3, the council awarded ‘A’ to two colleges, ‘B’ to 11 colleges and ‘C’ to two colleges from the state.
In their first attempt, five colleges including Maharishi College of Natural Law, RDS Degree Mahavidyalaya (Mayurbhanj), Brahmajharilo Mahavidyalaya (Kanpur), Achalika Mahavidyalaya and Mahapurush Achyutanand Mahavidyalaya (Cuttack) got ‘B’ grades while two colleges including Hindol College (Dhenkanal) and Anchalika Snataka Mahavidyalaya (Mayurbhanj) got ‘C’ grades.
On the other hand, in their second attempt, only two colleges including RD Women’s College and Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology in Rayagada were awarded ‘A’ grades while six colleges including Kamakhyanagar College in Dhenkanal, Brajrajnagar College in Jharsuguda, Choudwar College in Cuttack, Baba Bhairabananda Mahavidyalaya in Jajpur, Rayagada Women’s College, and Kuntala Kumari Sabat Women’s College in Balasore got ‘B’ grades.
RD Women’s College was first awarded an ‘A’ grade by NAAC in 2004. However, as the level of teaching and infrastructure were more or less unchanged, the NAAC decided not to upgrade the college from ‘A’ to ‘A+’.
“The efforts by the college officials and the students paid off, but we had more expectations. We had already received ‘A’ grade from NAAC in our first attempt and we were hoping to get a better grade this time. We’re however happy and will strive further to improve quality of education at our college,” said Chitrangada Samantasinghar, principal of RD College.
Authorities of Maharishi College were happy with the result. “This is the first time that NAAC visited our college. We are happy to receive ‘B’ from the council in our first attempt. We will work harder and will get ‘A’ next time. We will also enhance the quality of education in our college in the future,” said Basant Sahu, principal of Maharishi College.
