Berhampur: The prime accused in the acid attack on a teenage girl in Ganjam district was arrested Monday even as the condition of the victim remains critical. With this, the total number of arrests in the case has gone up to two.
Prime accused Toffan Bisoi (24) was arrested from Gangapur Monday, a police officer said. Sunday, the police had arrested Lipun Bisoi (19) from the same village. The 16-year-old girl, who sustained over 60 per cent burn injuries, had named the duo in her statement, the officer said. However, she could not recognise the other accused.
“Though her condition is stable, she is still not out of danger. She will be kept under observation for some more days,” doctors attending to her said. At least four persons attacked the girl and threw acid at her Saturday midnight after entering her house.
“We have identified the other accused persons. Search is on to nab them,” additional SP (Ganjam) Gupta Mohankuda said.
According to the victim’s mother, Toffan proposed the girl but was spurned by her. He had even approached her family for marriage, but the proposal was rejected.
Subsequently, Toffan married another girl but continued to stalk the victim. He even pressurized the girl to become his second wife.
This infuriated her family members who threatened Toffan to stop stalking the girl.
Irate over this, Toffan along with his friends committed the heinous crime, the victim’s family claimed.
The girl is now undergoing special treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Sub-collector Laxmikant Sethy met the girl and assured the family the government will bear all expenses of her treatment. PNN
