Rourkela: In a horrific incident, a girl strangulated her 55-year-old mother to death as she stood obstacle to her affair with a boy. She was assisted by her boyfriend in the heinous crime. The deceased was identified as Panu Nayak. The incident occurred at Sector-8 D-Block under Sector-7 police limits here. The matter came to fore after police arrested the girl Riya Kumari (21) and her boyfriend Subrat Bharasagar (20) alias Aryan Tuesday.
A case of murder was registered and the accused were produced in a court after they confessed to their crime during police interrogation. Police also seized a blanket used in the crime from the accused.
According to police, the Nayak family comprised Panu, her husband Aguni Nayak, two sons and daughters Riya and Sunita. Riya was in a relationship with Aryan for the last two years.
However, Riya’s mother was against the relationship. The reason for Puna’s dislike for Aryan was that he was jobless, it was learnt. She asked Riya not to see the boy and kept her indoors. This led to a rift between Riya and her mother.
Meanwhile, Riya eloped with Aryan and the couple went to Chennai where they lived together. They returned after two months, but Puna again opposed their relationship. The couple then decided to eliminate Puna.
On the fateful day, Riya’s father and brothers were out for work. As per plan, Riya took her little sister to a market on the pretext of eating fast food. She left Sunita at a fast food centre and returned home.
Aryan followed her and the two pounced on Puna, who was sleeping on a cot.
Aryan held her legs while Riya sat on her chest and strangulated her to death using a blanket. The duo then returned to the fast food centre. No one was aware of the incident until Puna failed to wake up the next morning.
Family members took her to Rourkela Government Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. Police registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem. Police launched an investigation after the autopsy report revealed that Puna was strangulated to death. PNN
