Ranpur: A woman has allegedly kept her in-laws captive at Dihagaon village near Ranpur police station in Nayagarh district, reports said.

According to a complaint lodged by Prabhasini Raoutray with Sunakhala outpost, daughter of Raghunath Routray of Dihagaon village, her brother Ranjan Routray’s wife Kuni Routray has kept her father Raghunath and mother Hema captive at home for more than one month now. She has not allowed any relatives to meet them.

Despite being ill, they have allegedly been denied permission to visit doctors.

After receiving the complaint, a team comprising Ranpur IIC Baidyanath Bhoi, Sunakhala outpost officer Subash Chamaptiray and some policemen reached the village to set the couple free. But they couldn’t free the couple due to stiff resistance from Kuni and some villagers.

Ranjan Routray (32), son of Raghunath Routray, is working as a health worker at a government hospital in Cuttack. He married Kuni Routray, the only daughter of Neelamani Pradhan of Khandiabandh village of Champapedi panchayat near Chandpur in Nayagarh district in 2015. They have a daughter.

Meanwhile, Ranjan developed an extramarital affair with one of his woman colleagues. When Kuni came to know about the affair, she asked Ranjan if it was true. Ranjan got angry and beat her up.

After informing her family about this, Kuni lodged a complaint with Sunakhala outpost against her husband and in-laws. Though a case was registered, the police did not arrest anyone.

The case took a twist when Kuni was not allowed to stay at her in-laws’ house.  Protesting against the treatment inflicted on Kuni, her father and some villagers staged a sit-in in front of Raghunath’s house. Later, following the intervention of police and villagers, Kuni was allowed to stay at home. But Ranjan has stopped coming to his house since then.

Kuni took a stand that she will allow her father and mother-in-laws to go to hospital only after Ranjan returns home.

On the other hand, her sister-in-law Prabhasisni has lodged a complaint with the police that Kuni is not allowing her ill parents to visit doctors.

When contacted, IIC Bhoi said, “After receiving the compliant from Prabhasini, we had gone to the village to find out a solution, but had to return as villagers and Kuni opposed us. Soon we will try to solve the problem with taking help of some senior villagers from both sides,” he added.
