Amrutjay clinches title

 Bhubaneswar, Sept 11: Top seed Amrutjay Mohanty of Orissa justified his billing to clinch the U-12 boys’ singles title of the Falcon Super Series tennis tournament after registering a convincing victory over second seed Hasith Gummuluru of Andhra Pradesh in the final at the Kalinga Stadium here Friday. Amrutjay prevailed 6-3, 6-4 against his AP rival.

In the U-12 girls’ category, top seed Naisha Srivastav of Karnataka emerged champion after beating fourth seed Vidhi Nimesh Jani of Gujarat. Naisha triumphed 6-3, 6-0. Vidhi gave some challenge in the first set, but the second set was a lop-sided affair.

Orissa thrash HPCA

Orissa colts achieved a hat-trick of wins Friday in the U-19 Dhruv Pandove Trophy cricket tournament, after scripting a thumping 96- run victory over Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) at Chandigarh.

Opting to bat first, Orissa scored 221 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 50 overs with the help of a patient half century by opener Priyatam Singh (67, 144b, 6×4).

In reply, HPCA were never in the chase and were bowled out for 125. Ravi Thakur (60, 76b, 6×4) was the only batsman to shine. Suman Mohanty (3/36) was the pick of the Orissa bowlers.

Brief scores: Orissa 221/8( Priyatam Singh 67; Nitin Sharma 2/45, Mayank Dagar 2/47) beat HPCA 125 (Ravi Thakur 60; Suman Mohanty 3/36) by 125 runs.
