Bhubaneswar, Dec 21: Anaam Almas of Orissa emerged champion in the U-16 category of the AITA Tennis Tournament after beating Ishika Gupta of West Bengal in the final at Kolkata, Monday. She won 6-2, 7-5.
After an easy first set, the second was a closely-contested affair with Ishika putting up a good fight. However, Anaam held her nerves to clinch the crucial points and win the tie.
Orissa knocked out
Orissa were knocked out of the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy cricket tournament despite getting a first innings lead of 78 runs on the final day of their three-day match against Jharkhand, which ended in a drawMonday at Jamshedpur. Orissa finished their campaign with nine points from four matches on the basis of three first innings leads and a defeat.
In reply to Orissa’s first innings total of 264, Jharkhand were skittled out for 186 as Pritam Jena (5/37) wreaked havoc.
Orissa declared their second innings on 90 for the loss of seven wickets. Chasing a victory target of 169, Jharkhand were 75 for the loss of five wickets at stumps.
Govind to lead
Govind Podder has been appointed skipper of the 15-member Orissa team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 cricket tournament which will be played at Cuttack, January 2-7. Abhilash Mallick, who was dropped from the Ranji Trophy squad and did not find a place in the 50-over team makes a return to the side. Suryakant Pradhan has not been kept in the team because of an injury.

Gadibramha clinch title
Gadibramha Women’s College emerged champions in the plus-2 Inter-College Ball Badminton tournament after beating hosts Sailabala Women’s College in the final at Cuttack, Monday. Gadibramha prevailed over Sailabala 29-7, 29-10. Gadibramha dominated throughout the tournament including the final.
