Anger & Agony

SHABIHA NUR KHATOON

Anger is a very interesting emotion. It is much like dynamite. A little bit of it can go a long way, but if used inappropriately it can backfire and blow up in your face. When you’re angry, it’s a red flag that something needs to change, and when you’re extremely angry, something needs to change right now. Anger is normal — but it’s important to deal with it in a positive way. Uncontrolled anger can damage your health and your relationships too. Keeping your temper in check can be challenging. We caught up with a few youths who shared their causes of anger with us.

Tanushree Dash said, “When I am angry with someone or something then I sit silently in my room just to avoid that the conversation doesn’t stretch too long. Sometimes I scream when there is something to say as I don’t like things to weigh on my mind so that any misunderstanding is not created.”

“I remember during my college life one of my boy friends who always used to mimic me. At first I let it go but everything has a limit; so one day I got so irritated with his behaviour that I scolded him in front of everyone but when I came back to normal mode I felt very bad and realised that I shouldn’t have done that. After that entire scene we both said sorry to each other,” she added.

“I am not a person who breaks things when my temper is at its peak; I have some other plans to deal with my anger. Nowadays, I am trying to keep myself silent whenever I am in a bad mood, as sometimes I say things in anger that hurt the sentiments of other people. So I sit silently and calm myself down,” said Nitu Singh.

She added, “Actually I don’t have any memories for which I should regret but sometime or the other I have hurt the feelings of my near and dear ones who actually love me a lot.”

Smruti Shikta Mohanty said that she doesn’t get angry very easily but once she gets angry she keep herself locked in her room and sits silently till her temper comes back to normal. “When I am angry I just lock myself in my room to control my temper, as I get angry very easily and I don’t want the negative things to control my mind so I flush out all the negative vibes. A funny experience of my anger was the day before my exams during my college life when I got so angry with something that I didn’t study the whole day; so on the day of the exam when I saw the question paper I realised that I had done a great mistake and I regretted for that. The exam day feeling was like din mein tare dikhna.”

Upasana Singh said, “Earlier I had control over my anger but these days I lose my temper very easily and get angry about small things. Whenever I get angry I sit silently in my room as silence is the best weapon to avoid many problems. The incident which is still fresh in my mind is when I had a fight with my friend not because of my anger but because of her anger. She always used to put his views without even listening to others’ views and she thought whatever she said was always right but that was not true. So my regret was that I couldn’t convey my views to her and couldn’t clear the air of misunderstanding with me.”
