Another farmer ends life in Cuttack

Banki: A ‘debt-ridden’ farmer breathed his last Saturday while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital after consuming pesticide.

He has been identified as Chaitanya Parida. Sources said, Parida had consumed pesticide December 21 under severe stress after suffering huge crop loss. After undergoing treatment at SCB for nine days, Parida succumbed Saturday, reports said.

The incident has spread tension among his kin. They demanded immediate compensation for his bereaved family.

According to sources, Parida had cultivated paddy this Kharif season by borrowing money from banks and private money lenders. He had hoped of a bumper harvest. However, his hopes of bumper harvest were dashed after he suffered crop loss.

Since then, he was under stress to repay his bank loans and run the errands of the family. Under stress, he consumed pesticide December 21. Family members spotted him writhing in pain and rushed him to the SCBMCH where he was undergoing treatment.

However, Parida after battling for life for the past nine days, he breathed his last this afternoon.

“He had taken loans for farming. He took the extreme step as he was under pressure for failing to repay the amount,” his family members claimed.
