Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched another Miyawaki forest in the Capital region, with an aim to spread the ‘A Tree for Mother’ initiative among urban residents.
Developed jointly by BMC and the Chandaka Forest Division, the project was inaugurated Wednesday on 1.5 acres of government land in Ward No 6. As part of the plan, 11,000 trees will be planted using the fast-growing Miyawaki method to boost greenery and counter rising temperatures caused by rapid urbanisation.
The plantation drive saw the participation of BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, commissioner Chanchal Rana, BMC’s additional commissioner, Chandaka DFO, standing committee chairpersons, local corporator, BMC and forest department staff, media representatives, NGO officials, and members of women’s self-help groups.
The site will not only serve as an urban green lung but will also feature facilities such as a morning walk track, said Das. Similar eco-spaces will also be developed at other suitable locations in the City in line with legal provisions, she added.
Earlier, BMC had launched a unique tree plantation initiative by planting 108 Bael saplings near Jhara Pond in the Pokhariput area.
