Puri:Nimapara IIC who had assaulted an elderly woman inside the police station was transferred Thursday to the district police headquarters. IIC Mrityunjay Swain will have to function there there till the completion of an investigation into the complaint against him.
On the direction of SP Sarthak Sarangi, additional SP Dhiren Kumar Nanda started the investigation Wednesday .
Rita, daughter-in-law of Basanti Palata, a 74-year-old Dalei Sahi in Dhirapur area here had lodged a complaint of torture by her-in laws with the police. Following this, the police summoned Basanti and her son to the police station May 7 for a compromise. However, both sides could not reconcile. Later Basanti alleged that she and her son were detained till 1pm and that the IIC thrashed her with a lathi during his questioning, resulting in injuries.
An onlooker at the station shot the incident, and the video went viral on social media. Basanti later lodged a complaint with the SP.
Swain is unrepentant. He dismissed the allegation as baseless and said he was ready to face any investigation.
