Bhubaneswar, April 27: Postal savings account holders in Orissa can now withdraw money from an ATM.
India Post’s Orissa circle Monday inaugurated the first-ever ATM kiosk in Orissa outside the GPO on Sachivalaya Marg in an effort to make core banking services more efficient.
The department, meanwhile, also inaugurated the second such ATM at Cuttack GPO.
Three more ATMs will be launched at Puri, Rourkela and Sambalpur shortly, while 39 more ATMs will be set up during this financial year in the state, according to officials of the department of posts.
The ATM service will allow postal saving account holders to withdraw money through the kiosk in the city.
“This is our new initiative to cater to the demands of our account holders and to extend the services to distant places. Now people who want to opt for ATM services for their saving bank accounts in the postal department can avail the service. This will help them withdrawing money anytime through these kiosks,” said Tilek De, chief postmaster general, Orissa circle. De also said that the customers can take out a maximum of Rs 40,000 per day.
According to the department, ATMs of all nationalized banks will soon be connected to the postal department network to reach out to people from remote areas and serve customers of the department more conveniently. In Orissa, around 1,15,000 lakh customers have postal saving accounts.
The first Core Banking Solution (CBS) post office in Orissa was opened at Bhubaneswar GPO December 1 last year. Now there are 36 CBS post offices operational in the state.
The department claims that the launch of the ATM service for customers is a major step to revamp the CBS network in the state.
