New Delhi, Feb 13: Unidentified people attacked a school in a posh area of the capital Friday morning, fuelling concern on the issue of security of minority institutions and provoking direct intervention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who called for checking the spiralling crime rate.
Unidentified people in the wee hours of Friday ransacked the Holy Child Auxilium, a Christian school in the posh Vasant Vihar area of south Delhi, after breaking open the office of the principal.
Sources said the attackers snapped CCTV cameras and damaged wiring. Around `8,000 was also stolen from the donation boxes of the school. The school was shut down and children sent home for the day.
This is the sixth such attack on a Christian institution in the last one year.
The Prime Minister, who expressed anguish and concern over the rising crime rate, summoned Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi and asked him to initiate tough measures to avert such incidents and bring the culprits to book.
He also spoke over phone to Union home secretary LC Goyal and directed him to pay special attention to the rising incidents of crime and vandalism and work towards ensuring the safety and security of women.
The police commissioner described the incident as a case of theft. “Our investigations have revealed that it’s a case of theft. The CCTV footages have revealed so too. A probe is on,” said Bassi.
Delhi Chief Minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal “strongly” condemned the attack saying, “These kinds of acts will not be tolerated.”
Union HRD minister Smriti Irani, who herself in an alumni of the school, visited the school in the afternoon and also spoke with Union home minister Rajnath Singh.
An FIR has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station.
