Indore: Australian vice-captain David Warner said here Saturday that for them to tackle spin the top order including himself need to fire and that the side were hoping to see injured opener Aaron Finch back in the playing XI for Sunday. Finch, so far has not played a single game in the series because of a injured right calf muscle which he sustained while playing for Surrey last month.
With Warner also struggling for runs, Australia have not been able to make an aggressive start. To their relief, Finch hit the nets here Saturday and also looked smooth while running during the morning practice session.
“I think you know what he will bring. He is a very good player and he has played a lot of cricket for us in the past couple of years,” Warner told reporters here.
“He (Finch) brings a lot of aggression at the top of the batting order. It was good to see him practicing hard and hopefully he will be fit for the game tomorrow (Sunday).”
Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have consistently bamboozled the visitors in the series but Warner said it has got nothing to do with the batsmen’s ability to pick their line.
Explaining the predicament, the left-hander said listless batting at the top makes it difficult to take the spinners head on.
“I find that the players can read them. One or two of the players probably can’t see the seam. One needs to have a game plan against spin. When you lose wickets in clumps, one gets tentative,” Warner pointed out.
“The moment our top-order fire, immediately the scenario would change. Then the spinners will be under pressure when they come on to bowl. The fact is that we have never been able to apply pressure on the Indian spinners,” the left-hander added.
