Babus told to meet 2019 housing target

Bhubaneswar: In an effort to achieve its goal of converting all kutcha houses into pucca houses by 2019, the state government has asked all the collectors to achieve cent per cent of the target set for the financial year 2017-18.

Holding a high-level review meeting with collectors through videoconferencing at the Secretariat here, Friday, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi directed the collectors and the Project Director of District Rural Development Agencies (DRDAs) to scale up the construction of 6.5 lakh houses during this fiscal.

According to official sources, 1, 42,902 houses have been constructed during this year, taking the total completion figure to 12, 76,124 since FY 2014-15.

As many as 22,730 houses had been constructed under Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana (BPGY) while 5,430 units completed under Biju Pucca Ghar (Mining), 991 houses under Nirman Sramik Pucca Ghar Yojana, 19,056 under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) and 94,695 houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PAMY).

The chief secretary further directed the officials to curb unethical practices by every means and take visible action against those found guilty of corrupt practices.

Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan, participating in the discussion, advised the collectors to work out the break-up of targets with detailed planning. Balakrishnan also suggested fixing specific targets for each employee engaged in the task and take up daily review of the progress through WhatsApp or SMS.

Panchayati Raj Secretary DK Singh advised the collectors to give finishing touches to the construction of toilets in the houses that are in the final stage of completion, during the Samrudhi and Swachhata Pakhwada that would be observed from October 1 to 15. Singh also asked the officials to ensure timely payment of bills and incentives to the beneficiaries.

The Chief Secretary also reviewed the progress of the piped drinking water projects in different districts. Collectors were directed to complete the ongoing 261 projects by the end of December 2017.

The collectors were advised to have detailed work plan for completion of the new projects within one and a half year of the commencement of the ground level work.

As many as 1,895 new drinking water projects have been sanctioned for different districts and urban local bodies (ULBs). Besides, 359 projects have also been sanctioned for mineral-bearing areas under the District Mineral Fund in eight districts – Angul, Jharsuguda, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Jajpur.
